Pat Parker: Vision in a Time of COVID

In early May, a good friend of CYS alerted us to a search underway at the LA Times and Instagram for stories of workers and visionaries on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. People from all walks of life who were actively contributing care and innovative solutions were wanted to be part of their month-long profile series.

When this search came to the attention of our Executive Director, Jessica Ellis, her thoughts turned immediately to Pat Parker, our Seeking Safety Specialist, who was actively engaged in rapidly transitioning the Voice of Compton project from an onsite school project at Compton’s Centennial High School, to an all online endeavor due to COVID-19 school closures.

This transition was a Herculean project of never-ending logistical and technical complications due to COVID-19 disruptions. After all her creative problem solving and perseverance, CYS was thrilled when Pat was selected to be profiled by the Times. With inspired remarks that can belong only to the project lead, Pat shared with the LA community just what is possible when we turn our attention and concerns to the youth who are looking for opportunities to find and take their place in the world.
