Local government representatives make decisions that affect our everyday lives. These decisions impact schools, policing, housing, transportation, sanitation, and public parks. As constituents, it is essential for us to know who our representatives are; and just as importantly, it is essential for them to who we are. Local officials are more accessible than state or national leaders, which makes it easier for constituents to meet with them to connect, and share what is important to us and our community.

School boards, city councils, and mayors have a major impact on the community. Once you find out who your representatives are, the next step is to have your voice heard. This can be done by attending open forums or town halls where residents have the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and hear directly from elected officials. Speaking at these meetings can influence decisions and demonstrate community support for an issue.
A great example of engaging civically is by participating in Neighborhood Councils, which are “are the closest form of government to the people.” (1) They are advisory bodies who, as representatives of their community, work with City Hall on important issues like development, homelessness, and emergency preparedness. When community members engage thoughtfully and consistently, they can influence decisions that affect their neighborhoods, schools, and families. Change doesn’t always start in Washington, D.C.; it often starts with a conversation in your own backyard.
