COMPTON PEACEMAKERS: COMMUNITY MEDIATION INSTITUTE (CMI)

Recently, a cohort of over twenty community members from in and around Compton completed an intensive five-day (30-hour) Community Mediator Institute (CMI) training. This training equipped participants with practical mediation and conflict-resolution skills grounded in restorative justice principles, empowering them to serve as trusted bridgebuilders within their communities.

Throughout the training, participants engaged in interactive learning experiences, role-playing exercises, and facilitated discussions focused on active listening, effective communication, neutrality, de-escalation techniques, and collaborative problem-solving. The training emphasized how mediation can help individuals and groups navigate conflict constructively while fostering accountability, healing, and stronger community relationships.

By building a network of trained mediators, this training supports safer, more connected neighborhoods where conflicts can be resolved through dialogue rather than escalation. Participants left the training with valuable skills they can apply in their professional roles, volunteer efforts, and everyday interactions, helping to promote understanding and peaceful conflict resolution throughout the community.
